A fear of “the ultimate panic attack” can push some individuals even deeper into anxiety and despair. This thinking can drive people to make changes to their habits and behaviour: the goal is not to do anything that might trigger a panic attack or foster anxiety. At this point, simple daily tasks become serious challenges: from driving a car or catching a bus, to walking down a street, completing simple work tasks, or even interacting with friends and family. Staying in “the safety zone” risks becoming a prison of our own making. But it doesn’t have to be like that.
